Description of #59 and survey results
1 December 2000: Triton #59 Arrives in Milton!
Off the truck, on the stands.
A description of the newly arrived Triton, #59.
Triton #59 was built in either 1960 or 1959. The previous owner says the date was actually 1960, but when he registered it in Massachusetts (he bought it from a man in Rhode Island) they put 1959 on the registration.
This Triton has a late-model Atomic 4 that was rebuilt around 1990. The boat came with an original bronze drive shaft which I later had to cut to replace the cutless bearing. More on that later.
Like
other Tritons of its era it has an external lead keel, no headliner and
unchromed bronze ports. The original rudder was replaced with a new one, fabricated
from plywood that was then covered with fiberglass. The galley and icebox had
been removed along with the cockpit icebox hatch.
Triton #59 came with two Danforth anchors and nylon rodes, bow pulpit, stern pulpit and double lifelines. There's a roller-furling jib and serviceable sails.
The original mahogany cockpit seat covers
had been replaced by plastic. There are cushions in salon and v-berth tired but
useable.
